Mira Alfassa – The Mother: Her Path and Mission
Mira Alfassa was born in 1878 in Paris. She grew up in an intellectual, cosmopolitan family and showed an early interest in art, music, philosophy, and spiritual questions. From a young age, she had mystical experiences and felt guided by an inner divine presence.
In her search for spiritual truth, she studied various esoteric and occult teachings, including those of Max Théon in Algeria. Despite her broad education and spiritual development, she felt unfulfilled—until she met Sri Aurobindo for the first time in Pondicherry, India, in 1914. She immediately recognized him as the one she had seen in inner visions—a true spiritual master.
After a short stay, she returned to India permanently in 1920, becoming Sri Aurobindo’s closest collaborator. Together, they developed the path of Integral Yoga, whose aim is not just the liberation of the individual but a profound transformation of the entire human being and life on Earth.
Her central mission was to manifest and carry out Sri Aurobindo’s spiritual work in practical terms. She led the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and served as a spiritual guide and mother to many. After Sri Aurobindo’s passing in 1950, she continued the work and in 1968 founded the international city of Auroville, as an experiment in human unity inspired by spiritual ideals.
